Today's Shop: Woodworker's Journal senior editor Chris Marshall pays tribute to his shop's standby tools: what couldn't he live without? Shop Test: Sandor Nagyszalanczy walks you through all the options for heating up your shop. What's available? How much heat do you need? What's most cost-effective? It's all in here. Jigs & Fixtures: One 4x8 sheet of plywood creates two clamp racks, storing over 80 clamps apiece, in Chris Marshall's practical, inexpensive shop storage project. Accordion Wall Lamp: This lamp's scissor arm extends up to 57 inches from the wall, literally bringing the light to the task. It involves several duplicate pieces: the builders encourage you to "jig up" every chance you get during construction. Bedroom Valet: Master woodworker Ian Kirby walks you through the thought process for designing a functional, purpose-built piece, like this Bedroom Valet for clothing and suitcase storage.
With four standard vise locations—one on each end, and two along the front edge—the Sjobergs Duo is capable of securely holding nearly any workpiece. Constructed entirely from solid European beech, it also makes no sacrifices in durability. The vises can be rotated to suit left- or right-handed woodworkers. In addition, they can be positioned as dual front vises to hold extra-long boards for jointing, or as dual tail vises for an extended lengthwise clamping capacity of 63''. For strength, the tops are constructed with full-length laminations of knot-free European beech, without any ugly splices. With a thickness of just over 1'' in the center, and a skirt of 2-3/4'', the top is very rigid. The Sjobergs Duo cabinetmaker's workbench is built to provide a lifetime of hard use and enjoyment. Beech top is just over 1'' thick in the middle, and 2-3/4'' around the edgeVises have a 4-1/2'' opening capacityDouble rows of bench dog holes extend from all vise locationsTrestle is also pre-drilled with dog holesIncludes four 3/4'' round plastic/glass fiber bench dogs
Combined with your T-Track Table, these stops give you a fast, accurate work holding solution for a wide variety of applications. The stops feature low-profile knobs that fold flat for easy clearance when sanding or machining. Inline Stops are useful when you want to sandwich a board between two stops so you can scrape, sand or plane in either direction. If you need light clamping pressure, tap a pair of carpenter's shims between one of the stops and you have a very secure holding system for light routing tasks or carving. The keyway on the bottom of the Inline Stop runs perpendicular to the stop face. Two other stop styles are available separately: Short and Long (both with keyways parallel to stop face).
