Each of these unique slabs is individually cut to reveal the most interesting grain and to preserve as much of the natural live edge as possible - use them for table tops, clock faces, signs, decorative wall hangings and whatever else your imagination can drum up. Live edge slabs reveal the individual character of the tree from which they were cut, and provide woodworkers with beautiful wide boards that would otherwise be ripped thin if milled for yield. Because of their width, most of these slabs won't fit through a jointer or planer. Instead, they are carefully flattened on a custom-built, manually-operated mill. The slabs are then sanded to 150-grit and given a light of coat of clear shellac for protection. All of these slabs are sourced from small family-owned mills that practice responsible land management. For dimensions refer to the grid in the photo: each red square represents 12''; each black square represents 4'' When necessary, checking and defects are carefully patched at the mill Sanded to 150-grit and coated with shellac for protection
This curly soft maple is highly figured with tiger-striped rays running perpendicular to the grain pattern. Along with the wood's light color, this striping lends a shimmering quality to the lumber. Even unfinished, the wood has a very pleasing interaction with light. It is no surprise, then, that curly maple has become a woodworker's favorite for accents, specialty furniture, musical instruments, and more.To make the figure in this curly maple really "pop", we recommend using an oil product (tung, linseed, etc.), as opposed to a stain. If a lacquer or urethane finish is necessary, adding a coat or two of clear wax-free shellac before the final finishing will ensure that the figure stands out.
For a versatile starter set, try our T-Track Stop Kit, which includes two Inline Stops and two Short Stops. This kit will get you started using the stops for work holding and light machining applications. The stops feature low-profile knobs that fold flat for tool clearance. Use the Short Stops on one end of the board to hold your work while belt sanding, hand planing, or scraping dried glue. Use the Inline Stops to sandwich a board so you can work in either direction. For light clamping pressure, tap some carpenter's shims between one of the Inline Stops. A third style-the Long Stop- is available separately (46010).
